What does the MA in Freelancing and Journalism Enterprise involve?

The MA in Freelancing and Journalism Enterprise offers you the chance to think about how you can make use of your journalistic skills in a new and enterprising way.

You will have the chance to learn or develop new media techniques and to experiment to find creative ways of gathering and distributing news. There will obviously be an emphasis on using enterprise to help you build a portfolio of skills and carve out a career for yourself in a fast-changing media world.

The MA in Freelancing and Journalism Enterprise involves exploring the future of news and feature writing and identifying new ideas that can help you exploit existing talents and develop new ones. Among the issues you will need to think about are:

  • How do we engage audiences in a digital world?
  • How can print and broadcast journalism still be relevant?
  • How can new media projects attract revenue?

You will have excellent access to resources and close personal contact with tutors, all of whom are experienced industry professionals.

The course offers tuition in all practical areas of freelancing and journalism enterprise, including:

  • Innovative approaches to developing an entrepreneurial project, event or business idea
  • Creative market research and marketing strategies
  • Developing an awareness of how to exploit intellectual property
  • Testing and developing a new concept or venture 
  • Online Journalism (led by Paul Bradshaw, an international authority on online journalism and publisher of the Online Journalism Blog)
  • Blogging and microblogging
  • Podcasting
  • Online video production
  • Computer Assisted Reporting and using social media for newsgathering
  • Social networking and online distribution strategies

Teaching is in small groups and the taught postgraduate phase of the course will comprise modules in enterprise; on-line journalism and social networking.

The Masters component entails a substantial piece of independent production or an extended academic dissertation.

Is it possible to work while I am studying for an MA in Freelancing and Journalism Enterprise?

The MA can be undertaken on either a full-time or part-time route and could well be studied alongside running a business or working as a freelance journalist.

It will be possible for assessments to be tailored to support existing enterprise and freelance work.

Students who are not already involved in such work will be aided in developing projects designed to help them get onto the first rung of the ladder.
