New bursary for international news course

In an exciting development UCE Birmingham has announced a new bursary designed to help a student from overseas to study on its revamped MA in International Broadcast Journalism course.

The course, which has operated successfully for a number of years, has been reviewed and updated. It will run in its new form for the first time from September 2007. Course Director Diane Kemp said: "The course team is committed to ensuring that we keep abreast of what is happening in the broadcast news industry. We believe the course is better than ever now."

The new £2,500 bursary is likely to further increase demand for places. Course Director Diane Kemp again, "The quality of students on this course is always high. We look for bright, well informed and mature people with a passion for news. The issue for all postgraduates though is how to fund their study. Hopefully this bursary will provide the extra support and encouragement which will make all the difference for one international student."

The MA in International Broadcast Journalism was set up in 1999 to teach international students practical UK based broadcast journalism. All the tutors are experienced journalists and producers. Alumni of the course have gone on to work in the media and education in various countries.

Details about how to apply for the bursary are below, including eligibility guidelines

MA in International Broadcast Journalism bursary.

The Department of Media and Communication is offering a £2,500 bursary to students of the MA IBJ course.

The task:

  • Tell us about a news story you think should be covered. It might be one which no-one has yet heard of, or it could a different angle on one which has already been told. Either way, it should have original elements in it and definitely be something an audience needs to know about. It can be for radio or television and it could be local to you or have a more international impact. One thing though, it must be true and you'll need to back up your assertions with evidence. As well as outlining the story in some detail, with any contextual information necessary, you should also identify the key people you would interview, and summarise their viewpoints.
  • Write it up in 500 words and submit it to the Course Director at Diane Kemp.

All submissions will be judged according to the criteria below by a panel of the MA IBJ course team. This bursary is open to all those who hold a place on the course, whether conditional or unconditional, or who are in the process of applying.

In assessing the submission we will be guided by the following criteria:

  • Originality of story and angle.
  • Evidence supplied to back up assertions.
  • Understanding of the story's appeal.
  • Clarity of expression.
  • Word limit applied.

Deadline: Final deadline for submission of entries is June 1st 2007.

Please note: The Department of Media and Communication is part of the Faculty BIAD. This Faculty also offers international students a reduction in fees of £1,000 to those who pay their deposit earliest. There are a limited number of these available, but some remain for the 2007 September intake. For information regarding this reduction please visit the International Office at UCE on http://www.uce.ac.uk/web2/international/scholarships.html.
