Research

The developing research culture of the Department of Media and Communication is reflected and supported by recurring events and integrated research-orientated practice.

A monthly research seminar allows scholars from within the department, as well as colleagues from other universities, to present completed and in-process research. Postgraduate students join staff to respond to work presented and to discuss emerging themes and trends in media studies scholarship. The 2006/2007 research seminar programme included presentations on the politics of dancing in the Northern Soul scene, uses of radio by rural Ugandan women, reality television and online political deliberation, and amateur folk music cultures.

Staff present research at national and international conferences in media and communication, and publish with leading presses and in key academic journals. The department holds institutional memberships with professional organisations including MeCCSA, IASPM, and CIPR. Media and Communication staff are involved in collaborative activities with colleagues based at this and other universities, as well as with media industry partners, particularly small business enterprises and local media producers. Staff at Screen Media Lab, the department’s centre for enterprise and innovation in screen media and visual design, are currently engaged in a number of research projects with businesses from the creative industries, about which more information can be accessed at the dedicated SML site.

Individual and groups of staff have been awarded grants from within the university and from external councils (such as LSC, AHRC, UNESCO) to conduct a range of media research projects. Individual scholars are currently working in a variety of research areas; please view the research team members’ profiles on the left for details. The commitment with which staff approach media and communication scholarship extends to the mentorship of undergraduate and postgraduate students: the research process is an important focus of the taught theoretical programme, the success of which can be seen in academically rigorous dissertations submitted by students at all levels.

The department offers postgraduate research degrees on a full-time or part-time basis, and MPhil and PhD candidates are encouraged to take advantage of the research-focussed events and professional experiences valued by the department. In addition to the individualised support offered by supervisors, the Media and Communication team aims to provide postgraduate researchers with opportunities to engage in aspects of professional academic life, from attending conferences and submitting work to journals, to assisting in preparation and delivery of undergraduate modules.
